Malala Yousafai DLO

LI: design a poster promoting one of Malala’s key messages (e.g., ‘Education is the only solution,’ ‘The pen is mightier than the sword,’ ‘One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world’).

For reading, we were challenged to create a poster about Malala Yosufai key messages that she said in her speech. Before we did this challenge we watched a video of Malala Yosufai speech, in her speech she talks about her fighting for her own rights and why she did this speech. We read a text about ‘Malala Yousafai Speech at United Nations Youth Assembly 2013′, on our guided reading we went through and answered questions by using our own words or getting hints from Gemini. I enjoyed doing this task because we get a full understanding about why e should fight for our rights.

TLW – Word Problems

For maths, we created a presentation as a group about word problems for Tonga Language Week. We made the problems out of  a topic or Tonga items. We had one word problem each on each slide, some used Tonga groceries, Tonga items, lolly lei etc. In the word problems we included equations (+, x, -, divison, kilometers, meters). I enjoyed this task because we get to learn about Tonga Language Week by using maths.

‘Shameful stain on NZ history’: Polynesian Panthers push for dawn raids apology

LI: To evaluate (form an opinion) the text and respond to the provocation

For reading, Group 2 read a text called ‘Shameful stain on NZ history’: Polynesian Panthers push for dawn raids apology and were given the provocation – Should the Government of today(2021) apologise for the dawn raids of yesterday (1970s)? We were challenged to create a DLO that explores and discusses both perspectives of this historical event in our groups. Me and my partner used our smart searching skills to learn and find stuff about the dawn raids, which lead us to do why the government should apologies and why not + our own opinion. For our own opinion we choose perspective A (yes, the government of today should have apologized for the dawn raids of yesterday) because if they didn’t apologies there would be hate and harassment going towards them, and which have already hurt a lot of families etc. Something I found interesting about this text was that families and people have been going through a lot but when they apologized people forgave the government and started a new generation for those.

Once a Panther

LI: To identify the key historical context and events related to the Polynesian Panthers and the Dawn Raids as depicted in the graphic novel.

For reading, we read a text about Polynesian panthers, but the topic was called Once a Panther. Group 2 was challenged to create a comic strip that describes a scene related to the ideas of prejudice and justice by using thought bubbles or dialogue that explains the image. Something I have found interesting about this challenge is that we are learning this because we need to understand the meaning behind this.

AI Movie

LI: To use our knowledge about dinosaurs in creative ways

For inquiry, we were given 2 challenges to help us show our learning in creative and fun ways. The first challenge was to use Adobe Express to generate an image about each dinosaur on our completed sheet. The second challenge was to use ai hailuoai.video to create an AI flim showing our dinosaurs in their habitat. I enjoyed doing this challenge because we get to use our creative skills to generate an image of our dinosaurus.

RISE UP: The Story of the Dawn Raids and the Polynesian Panthers

LI: To evaluate (form an opinion) the text and respond to the provocation

For reading, Group 2 read a text called RISE UP: The Story of the Dawn Raids and the Polynesian Panthers. We were challenged to create a DLO that explores and discusses both perspectives of this historical event in our groups. We used our smart searching skills to learn and find stuff about the dawn raids, which lead us to talk about the dawn raids. For our own opinion , we said that we think the dawn raids was a very discriminal and shameful event that occured in New Zealand. Something I found interesting about this text was that alot of policies had targeted pacific people just because they don’t belong in this country.

Trip to Auckland War Memorial Museum

For inquiry, we learned about volcanoes, what type of volcanoes they have and the different size/shape of the volcano. We went to the museum to finish our topic on volcanoes and learn more interesting things we don’t know. Our challenge in the volcano room was that we had 30 seconds to decide what to pack if there was a volcanic eruption near us. We were put into a group of boys and girls and on the table, there was a backpack, toys, can of food, hole punch, torch, can opener, pan, gloves, cat, muesli bar, cat food, goggles, bottle of water, tea towel, first aid kit, mask and a coloring book. Our group was in a rush, but we were using our thinking skills wisely. In our backpack we took everything but the can opener, mask and a coloring book. One group took everything, and the other group took everything except for the cat. During the museum we headed into the World War 2 and during that time we had to be absolutely respectful and quiet in that area. One interesting fact when we walked around in the galleries was when we walked into World War 2 and that there is a specific book opened but locked inside a box that shares the diary that the solders had written about what is going on. They flip the page every single day leading to a different solider diary.

Backpack choices:

  • backpack
  • toys
  • can of food
  • hole punch
  • torch
  • can opener
  • pan
  • gloves
  • cat
  • muesli bar
  • cat food
  • goggles
  • bottle of water
  • tea towel
  • first aid kit
  • mask
  • coloring book

Dinosaur Eggs

LI: To understand how scientists discover, record and learn from fossils.

For inquiry, we were challenged to used Adobe Express to imagine what a real dinosaur egg might have look liked in the wild when paleontologist discovered fossils/eggs/dinosaur. Before we did the AI challenge, we opened our mystery dinosaur eggs and we discovered an Ankylosaurus. Using what we learned about dinosaurs and finding facts, we created an image that looked like the little dinosaur egg was found and hidden in a forest. In this image me and my partner added details like, footprints on the egg, creatures/insects crawling behind or surrounding the egg, rocks and things you could find in the forest. This challenge is to show our knowledge and skills of what a paleontologists might have seen years ago. I enjoyed this activity because we get to discover and show what paleontologist would’ve seen and found years ago. Do you know why paleontologist study fossils?

Paired Research Challenge

LI: to research questions about your dinosaur including their habitat, diet, predators, and protection.

For Inquiry we learned about dinosaur and fossils. We were challenged to create a presentation that tells facts about the dinosaurs we found when we created our eggs and hatched them open which was a Ankylosaurus. In the presentation we included their habitat, diet and protection. An interesting fact we found in this activity is that ankylosaurus tail is super powerful and their body is covered in bony plates (osteoderms).
