My Pepeha

LI : To write and say our pepeha.

We each got to write our pephea, to helps us get to know eachother, or more about them. A pephea is introducing yourself in Te Reo Maori, and what you identify as and where you are from. This allows us to make connections and form friendships with my class mates as well as family.

I found this activity enjoyable because other people can get to know about me.

School Gala

This week for Miss White & Miss Tele’a inquiry group we learned how to understand people’s needs and a school gala.

Conducting forms and surveys is a valuable method for gathering information and insights from a target audience in market research. Read through my form and answer the questions and also think of what you will need.

What is a school gala? A school gala is where people create stuff for people if they need stuff. In our class, we are creating bookmarks and pencil cases for the kids if they need stuff to do during the school days.

First, Miss Tele’a explained to us what a school gala was. When she finished explaining it, she told us what we would be creating for the school gala. We would be creating bookmarks and pencil cases.

Next, she told us what our task was to get started for the school gala. Our task was to create a form about the school gala. In the form we had to put in, what year are you, colour, the size, designs, shapes, bookmarks and pencil cases, materials, and other sorts of things.

Then, when we finished filling in the form, we had to add my form link into a spreadsheet for people to fill out my form. We had to fill out 2 people forms – the name above and below your own. After we finish, my teacher will show me how to create a sheet that shows the response of how many people have filled out my form. For now I got 10 people who filled me out.

Lastly, Miss Tele’a showed us a DLO for what we have to do when we finish doing the form. In the DLO it talks about form results. In the DLO it shows the questions and we have to answer them by looking at the responses and pasting it onto the DLO.

I enjoyed doing the form. I did well at filling out other peoples forms. I need to improve on thinking of different things to create next time.

Legends of Learning

This week’s assignment for Inquiry was on Legends of Learning.

The first task was about caring for and meeting the needs of different living beings (plant, herbivorous animal and carnivoros), providing them with the energy source corresponding to each species.

The second task was about how the amount of matter in a substance is conserved when it changes form, even when it appears to vanish. I learnt that when you put water in the cold it turns into ice, and when you put ice into the heat it turns back to water because it melts at a high temperature.

The last task is about identifying decisions involving income, spending, saving, credit and charitable giving – this is a hint at what our inquiry topic is next term. I learnt that you get money each time you work and break down woods with a type of material.

I enjoyed doing this task. I did well at finishing my first task really easily. I need to improve on breaking more wood to earn more money for the loan.

Te Wiki o te Reo Maori

This week for Miss White’s inquiry group we learned about te wiki o te Reo Māori for Māori language weekend.

First, I had to make a copy of the te wiki o te Reo Māori google slide. There were 15 tasks to do during the whole block. I first started off with the KWL chart. K stands for Knowledge, W stands for Wonder, and L stands with Learned. For knowledge I had to write down what I already know about Māori. For wonder I had to write down questions I would like to know about Māori, and for learned I had to write down what I already learned.

Next, I had to learn how to introduce yourself in Te Reo Māori. I had to watch a video below and write my own mihi in the box. For example: Ko Brooke tōku ingoa. After I finish watching the video, I had to watch the video linked below, and to find the Māori translation for the Kupu. For example: what is this? He aha Tenie. After I finished doing the matches in Māori, I had to choose one of the stories below to listen to or read. The options were Journey of a waka, ika a whiro, oriori, nga pepeha a nga tupuna, Rahui, he toi whaka iro, weaving tukutuku, and kakano. I picked Rahui because it looks interesting.

Then, I had to do SSR Selfie (Super Silent reading). I had to write down who is the author or illustrator, who are the main character, recount what happened in the story, and list three words with your meaning in your own words from the story or book you have listen to or read. For example: Happy means kind of excited. After we finished, we had to find ways we can respond to, for example: Kei te pehea Koe? We had to translate it to English to Māori. One of the sentences were, I am feeling well. We also had to join the Kupu – Using the line tool, match the Kupu to its’ correct translation.

Korero between friends.  Insert a photo of yourself, and a photo of a classmate. Make your speech bubble ask your friend how they are in Te Reo.  Choose one of the responses from slides 5-6 for your classmate to use in response to you. My partner for the slide was my friend called Sila. She asked me “He Pene Tenei.” which means this is a pencil. After that we had to Kei te aha Koe? What are you doing? Watch the video, then match the Kupu. I completed all of the Kupu and matched it with the right order. Then he had to do another Korero between friends.  Insert a photo of yourself, and a photo of a classmate. Make your speech bubble ask your friend how they are in Te Reo.  Choose one of the responses from slide 8 for your classmate to use in response to you. She asked me “Kei te pai ahau” which means I am feeling good.

After, we had to choose one of the tasks below to complete as your DLO part of your project. The options were to interactive quiz (Kahoot, Booklet, Quizlet etc. Google Slide quiz etc.), virtual tour – create a virtual tour using Screencast and Google Earth to create virtual tours of significant Māori cultural sites, digital Storybook – Use Pixton to make a comic or Google Slides to make an animation of narratives that incorporate what you’ve learnt about Māori legends, myths, or historical events, infographic – Use Google Drawings to present key information or language you’ve learnt from the Māori culture, Māori Language Phrasebook – Use Google Docs, or Slides, or Drawings to create a Māori Language Phrasebook, or Māori Worksheet – be a teacher and create a worksheet you could use to “test” student’s knowledge of Māori language.  This can be designed for a Year 1 student, or a Year 8 student. I picked to make a DLO.

Lastly, we get to play Māori math games. There were numbers in Māori, Māori Color, Fruit & Veg, and Animals, and last for not least Māori Vocabulary – this game requires you to learn the words before playing. After we finish playing the different type of games, we had to take a screenshot of our score.

Melting Ice

This week for Miss White inquiry groups I learned about exploring the concepts of states of matter and their transformations through the kitchen experiments.

What is a kitchen experiment? Kitchen experiment is where you can cook, bake, and set up an activity, create science magic, make lava lamps and volcanoes, or even play with ice.

First, we had to predict what piece of ice would melt the fastest and why. The 3 types of ice were, normal ice, salt on ice, and folid on ice. For example: the normal ice melted the fastest then the salt on ice and the foild on ice.

Next, Miss White said we had to get into a group of 4 or 5. In my group we had 5 and they were Sila, Unique, Jenesis, and Armani.

Then, 3 people in each group had to stand up and go to Miss White to grab the materials to do the ice. The materials were, 3x ice cubes, salt, plate, tinfoil, and timer.

Lastly, we had to write down your name, purpose, question, what do you think will happen, what is needed to carry out your experiment, procedure, observation, and conclusion. The question was how long does it take for the ice to melt in different materials, why does salt melt ice quicker, and why does insulation keep things cold?

All About Marie Curie

Marie Curie was born on the 7th of November in 1867, She was born in Poland, She was well known for her discovered polonium and radium as well.  Her celebrated use of radiation in medicine changed our understanding of radioactivity. She did lots of discovery of radium and polonium.

Field of Study :

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • She was a pioneer in these areas of study.
  • Fun Facts :
  •  She studied in Paris.
  •  Marie Curie and her husband discovered polonium.
  •  They also discovered radium.
  •  She was awarded a second nobel prize.
  •  A hospital was named after her.

This week for Miss Tele’a’s inquiry task we were learning how to understand what a scientist is.

Scientists are individuals who conduct research and investigate the world around us.

First, we had to talk to our partner next to us and tell or ask them what a scientist is. Scientists are individuals who conduct research and investigate the world around us.

Next, Miss Tele’a explained  6 different examples of people who work and are scientists. The 6 different types of people were Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Jacqueline Beggs, Rosalind Franklin, Peter Buck, and Thomas Edison. Marie Curie is a physicist and chemist, Albert Einstein is a physicist. Jacqueline Beggs is an entomologist. Rosalind Franklin is a chemist. Peter Buck is an anthropologist. Thomas Edison is a scientist and inventor.

Lastly, we had to make a copy of a DLO that is an infographic of the scientist we chose.  I picked Marie Curie because I don’t know her and I want to know a little more about her.

Matariki

This week for inquiry we learned how to understand the meaning of matariki and to identify the stars of the matariki. For example : Matariki is a type of celebration.

The meaning of matariki is the Maori name for the cluster of stars also known as the pleiades it also are tiny eyes or eyes of god” and is celebrated in june when a small group of stars called Pleiades rises above the horizon, bringing the old year to a close and starting a new year.

First, we had to discuss in a group what matariki is and means. The meaning of matariki is the mario name for the cluster of stars also known as the pleiades it also are tiny eyes or eyes of god” and is celebrated in june when a small group of stars called Pleiades rises above the horizon, bringing the old year to a close and starting a new year.

Next, Miss Tele’a told us to make a copy of a google slide that talks about matariki and to do some activites on the google slide. We had to pick 2 or 3 actijvites to do. The options were to research the history of iwi and hapu who first settled near a river, lake or wetlands closet to you, find a calender of tides and explore ideal swimming and fishing times, design a contraption to collect rainwater, find out what contributes to air pollution, learn the best time to grow vegetables, find a recipe using fruits and berries, set personal or learnign goals, in Google Docs, write a memoir of a loved one OR remember loved ones we have lost (this could include pets), or to plan an event with loved ones.

Lastly, I picked “In Google Docs, write a memoir of a loved one OR remember loved ones we have lost (this could include pets)”. I wrote down memories about my nana. I said ” My favourite memory about my wonderful nana is that she used to look after me when I was little and play with each other. The sad part I’m gonna miss is her smile that she always has on her face and bathing me when I was born. I love the way she talks to me about stuff our family doesn’t know. My Nana always goes somewhere and I ask her “Nana can I come” and she said yes. She is the bravest, and kindest person in the world.”

I enjoyed doing this task. I did well at explanning what matariki is. I need to improve on adding more activites.

This my document about memories about my nana!

Food Labels

This week for inquiry we learned about identifying the key components of a food label and reading and understanding food labels to make informed decisions about what we can eat.

Food Labels is any tag, brand, mark, pictorial or other descriptive matter, written, printed, stencilled, marked, embossed or impressed on, or attached to, a container of food or food product.

First, we had to discuss in a group what the food label is. Food label is any tag that is on a container or food product. In a group we took turns telling each other what the food label is.

Next, we had to make a copy of a google slide that talks about food labels and write down what they are and why it’s important. We also had to customise the google slide to my preference (colour, font, images, and food labels). For example: Is the amount of food listed on a product’s Nutrition Facts label, or food label. Different products have different serving sizes and the reason why it’s important is because Serving sizes can help you when choosing foods and when comparing similar items while shopping

Lastly, we had to show our teacher the information (google slide) about serving size, calorie count, nutritional facts, ingredients list, and allergies.

Food Safety

This week for inquiry we learned about how can we ensure ingredients/food is safe to eat & food safety guide.

Food safety means knowing how to buy, prepare, and store food to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria that cause foodborne illnesses. Always wash your hands with warm water and soap before preparing foods and after handling raw meat, poultry, fish, or eggs.

First, we had to discuss in a group what food safety is. Food safety is where you buy or prepare food to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria.

Next, we watched video (music song) that talks about the 4 different type of ways to keep the bacteria away from the foods. They are clean, seperate, cook, and chill. Clean is where you have to wash your hands and utensils to avoid spreading bacteria when preparing food. Separate is where you use different cutting boards for meat, poultry, seafood, and veggies. Cook is where you can’t tell it’s done by how it looks & chill is where you keep the fridge at 40 °F or below to keep bacteria from growing.

Then, we had to define 6 words and terms. For example : I picked bacteria and define the word by saying “Bacteria – are tiny, single-celled organisms that get nutrients from their environments”.

After we had to explain what the 5 different words/sentence is. They are washing fruits and veggies, proper cooking temperture, food storage and handling, food expiration dates, and food allergies.

Lastly we had to make a DLO explanng the 4 different type of ways to keep the bacteria way from fruit, meat, and veggies.

Plastic Pollution

This week for Inquiry I learned about plastic pollution.

Plastic pollution is when plastic stays in the sea for too long.

First I had to write down on a paper with my group about plastic pollution. My group name was Angie, Fern, Easton, Armani, and Ene.

Next I had to talk about plastic pollution. For example :The reason why plastic pollution is bad is because when you throw rubbish in the sea the sea creatures will eat it and might get sick and might die.

Lastly I had to make a DLO about plastic pollution. For example : I will talk about why plastic pollution is bad?

I enjoyed doing this task. I did well at talking about plastic pollution. I need to improve on adding more ideas.
