Diorama – Rosa Parks

LI: To explore a moment in time (history) and create a diorama to capture events in once scene.

For Inquiry, we used our smart searching skills to research a moment in time that captures our interest. In our moment in time, I chose Rosa Parks because it captured my interest. We used cardboard to trace and cut out our pieces. I drew Rosa Parks while she was in jail and the bus that she refused to move. For the bus, I used scissors to cut down the side of the bus to make it 3D. We also used a box and double sided tape to stick our drawing onto the box. Something I found interesting about Rosa Parks is when James (bus driver), told her to move but during that time she said she wasn’t tired, but tired of giving in which means she was tired of people treating her people unfairly and mocking her for the colour of her skin.

Ancient time

LI: To explore how our ancestors measured time

For inquiry, we learned about ancient telling time (hourglass, sundial, clepsydra). We used our smart searching skills to research and create a DLO that tells us about ancient timekeeping devices. We were challenged to get into groups of 3, and to find out what our device will be. An hourglass was used in ancient times, some people call it sand time or sandglass. Sundial was created in Ancient Egypt around 15000 BC, people use this to connect to natural time or to teach them about the Earth’s rotation. Clepsydra is an ancient water clock that measures time. We watched a video that tells us the brief history of keeping time. We enjoyed doing this activity because we get to learn and understand the history of ancient times.

AI movie day/night

LI: To understand the how time move

For inquiry, we were challenged to use our smart searching skills to research day and night, creating an AI video to show the process. We watched 2 videos that explained the Earth’s rotation and revolution, day and time. One full rotation of the Earth is one day, the part facing the light is a day and the part in shadow is night. We used Hailuo AI to create our video that shows the earth rotating that is transferring from day to night by creating our own prompt. We enjoyed doing this activity because we get to use our skills to create a video by AI and get to know how time moves.

Procedural Writing

LI: To create a procedural text to tell someone how to do something using a sequence of steps, instructions or actions in a particular order.

For Inquiry we were learning about dinosaurus and their facts. We created our Ankylosaurus out of paper and supplies. To make our dinosaurus we need glue, ruler, black paper, normal paper, pencil, tape and scissors.  After we wrote our instructions/steps on how to create a Ankylosaurus for our classmates to try it out. Me and my partner used red paper as a practice round and black paper for the real one. I enjoyed doing this because we used our creative skills to make dinosaurus out of paper.

Trip to Auckland War Memorial Museum

For inquiry, we learned about volcanoes, what type of volcanoes they have and the different size/shape of the volcano. We went to the museum to finish our topic on volcanoes and learn more interesting things we don’t know. Our challenge in the volcano room was that we had 30 seconds to decide what to pack if there was a volcanic eruption near us. We were put into a group of boys and girls and on the table, there was a backpack, toys, can of food, hole punch, torch, can opener, pan, gloves, cat, muesli bar, cat food, goggles, bottle of water, tea towel, first aid kit, mask and a coloring book. Our group was in a rush, but we were using our thinking skills wisely. In our backpack we took everything but the can opener, mask and a coloring book. One group took everything, and the other group took everything except for the cat. During the museum we headed into the World War 2 and during that time we had to be absolutely respectful and quiet in that area. One interesting fact when we walked around in the galleries was when we walked into World War 2 and that there is a specific book opened but locked inside a box that shares the diary that the solders had written about what is going on. They flip the page every single day leading to a different solider diary.

Backpack choices:

  • backpack
  • toys
  • can of food
  • hole punch
  • torch
  • can opener
  • pan
  • gloves
  • cat
  • muesli bar
  • cat food
  • goggles
  • bottle of water
  • tea towel
  • first aid kit
  • mask
  • coloring book

Dinosaur Eggs

LI: To understand how scientists discover, record and learn from fossils.

For inquiry, we were challenged to used Adobe Express to imagine what a real dinosaur egg might have look liked in the wild when paleontologist discovered fossils/eggs/dinosaur. Before we did the AI challenge, we opened our mystery dinosaur eggs and we discovered an Ankylosaurus. Using what we learned about dinosaurs and finding facts, we created an image that looked like the little dinosaur egg was found and hidden in a forest. In this image me and my partner added details like, footprints on the egg, creatures/insects crawling behind or surrounding the egg, rocks and things you could find in the forest. This challenge is to show our knowledge and skills of what a paleontologists might have seen years ago. I enjoyed this activity because we get to discover and show what paleontologist would’ve seen and found years ago. Do you know why paleontologist study fossils?

Paired Research Challenge

LI: to research questions about your dinosaur including their habitat, diet, predators, and protection.

For Inquiry we learned about dinosaur and fossils. We were challenged to create a presentation that tells facts about the dinosaurs we found when we created our eggs and hatched them open which was a Ankylosaurus. In the presentation we included their habitat, diet and protection. An interesting fact we found in this activity is that ankylosaurus tail is super powerful and their body is covered in bony plates (osteoderms).

Fossils

LI: To understand how scientists know so much about dinosaurs.

LI: To recognise different types of fossils and how they are formed.

For this activity, we were challenged to get into a group and create a DLO explaining the difference between Trace fossils and body fossils. In the DLO we included examples, information about each topic and the meaning behind it. For an example: Trace fossils are leaving important evidence behind, footprint, trail, burrow and other things that are related. Body fossils are unexpected things like bones, dinosaur skeletons, shells of marine creatures etc. Something interesting about this activity is that trace fossils can be found in hills or hard surfaces.

Mary Anning

LI: To create a DLO that tells Mary Annings story from her perspective story.

For inquiry we learned about dinosaurs, fossils and paleontologists. We were challenged to create a story about Mary Anning who is known as a famous fossil hunter and paleontologist in 1811. We went into partners and created a google vid that tells us about what happened and what she did during being a palaeontologist. Something I found interesting was Mary Anning was the only person who survived when the lightning struck, and when her father passed away and they were poor so she started to sell her fossils she had found in cliffs and in the beaches in Lyme Regis in England to carry on her fathers career.

Paleontologist

For inquiry, we watched a video showing paleontologists digging for dinosaurs. We learned about what a paleontologist is and what they do. For this activity we were challenged to create a 50 word statement that tells us what paleontology is and what palaeontologists do on a DLO but the challenge was that we couldn’t use over or under 50 words. One fact we found interesting is that Mary Anning was the first ever palaeontologist to find a fossil or a paleontologist has to examine fossils to identify what type of fossils it is.
