All About Marie Curie

Marie Curie was born on the 7th of November in 1867, She was born in Poland, She was well known for her discovered polonium and radium as well.  Her celebrated use of radiation in medicine changed our understanding of radioactivity. She did lots of discovery of radium and polonium.

Field of Study :

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • She was a pioneer in these areas of study.
  • Fun Facts :
  •  She studied in Paris.
  •  Marie Curie and her husband discovered polonium.
  •  They also discovered radium.
  •  She was awarded a second nobel prize.
  •  A hospital was named after her.

This week for Miss Tele’a’s inquiry task we were learning how to understand what a scientist is.

Scientists are individuals who conduct research and investigate the world around us.

First, we had to talk to our partner next to us and tell or ask them what a scientist is. Scientists are individuals who conduct research and investigate the world around us.

Next, Miss Tele’a explained  6 different examples of people who work and are scientists. The 6 different types of people were Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Jacqueline Beggs, Rosalind Franklin, Peter Buck, and Thomas Edison. Marie Curie is a physicist and chemist, Albert Einstein is a physicist. Jacqueline Beggs is an entomologist. Rosalind Franklin is a chemist. Peter Buck is an anthropologist. Thomas Edison is a scientist and inventor.

Lastly, we had to make a copy of a DLO that is an infographic of the scientist we chose.  I picked Marie Curie because I don’t know her and I want to know a little more about her.

Matariki

This week for inquiry we learned how to understand the meaning of matariki and to identify the stars of the matariki. For example : Matariki is a type of celebration.

The meaning of matariki is the Maori name for the cluster of stars also known as the pleiades it also are tiny eyes or eyes of god” and is celebrated in june when a small group of stars called Pleiades rises above the horizon, bringing the old year to a close and starting a new year.

First, we had to discuss in a group what matariki is and means. The meaning of matariki is the mario name for the cluster of stars also known as the pleiades it also are tiny eyes or eyes of god” and is celebrated in june when a small group of stars called Pleiades rises above the horizon, bringing the old year to a close and starting a new year.

Next, Miss Tele’a told us to make a copy of a google slide that talks about matariki and to do some activites on the google slide. We had to pick 2 or 3 actijvites to do. The options were to research the history of iwi and hapu who first settled near a river, lake or wetlands closet to you, find a calender of tides and explore ideal swimming and fishing times, design a contraption to collect rainwater, find out what contributes to air pollution, learn the best time to grow vegetables, find a recipe using fruits and berries, set personal or learnign goals, in Google Docs, write a memoir of a loved one OR remember loved ones we have lost (this could include pets), or to plan an event with loved ones.

Lastly, I picked “In Google Docs, write a memoir of a loved one OR remember loved ones we have lost (this could include pets)”. I wrote down memories about my nana. I said ” My favourite memory about my wonderful nana is that she used to look after me when I was little and play with each other. The sad part I’m gonna miss is her smile that she always has on her face and bathing me when I was born. I love the way she talks to me about stuff our family doesn’t know. My Nana always goes somewhere and I ask her “Nana can I come” and she said yes. She is the bravest, and kindest person in the world.”

I enjoyed doing this task. I did well at explanning what matariki is. I need to improve on adding more activites.

This my document about memories about my nana!

Food Labels

This week for inquiry we learned about identifying the key components of a food label and reading and understanding food labels to make informed decisions about what we can eat.

Food Labels is any tag, brand, mark, pictorial or other descriptive matter, written, printed, stencilled, marked, embossed or impressed on, or attached to, a container of food or food product.

First, we had to discuss in a group what the food label is. Food label is any tag that is on a container or food product. In a group we took turns telling each other what the food label is.

Next, we had to make a copy of a google slide that talks about food labels and write down what they are and why it’s important. We also had to customise the google slide to my preference (colour, font, images, and food labels). For example: Is the amount of food listed on a product’s Nutrition Facts label, or food label. Different products have different serving sizes and the reason why it’s important is because Serving sizes can help you when choosing foods and when comparing similar items while shopping

Lastly, we had to show our teacher the information (google slide) about serving size, calorie count, nutritional facts, ingredients list, and allergies.

Food Safety

This week for inquiry we learned about how can we ensure ingredients/food is safe to eat & food safety guide.

Food safety means knowing how to buy, prepare, and store food to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria that cause foodborne illnesses. Always wash your hands with warm water and soap before preparing foods and after handling raw meat, poultry, fish, or eggs.

First, we had to discuss in a group what food safety is. Food safety is where you buy or prepare food to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria.

Next, we watched video (music song) that talks about the 4 different type of ways to keep the bacteria away from the foods. They are clean, seperate, cook, and chill. Clean is where you have to wash your hands and utensils to avoid spreading bacteria when preparing food. Separate is where you use different cutting boards for meat, poultry, seafood, and veggies. Cook is where you can’t tell it’s done by how it looks & chill is where you keep the fridge at 40 °F or below to keep bacteria from growing.

Then, we had to define 6 words and terms. For example : I picked bacteria and define the word by saying “Bacteria – are tiny, single-celled organisms that get nutrients from their environments”.

After we had to explain what the 5 different words/sentence is. They are washing fruits and veggies, proper cooking temperture, food storage and handling, food expiration dates, and food allergies.

Lastly we had to make a DLO explanng the 4 different type of ways to keep the bacteria way from fruit, meat, and veggies.

Plastic Pollution

This week for Inquiry I learned about plastic pollution.

Plastic pollution is when plastic stays in the sea for too long.

First I had to write down on a paper with my group about plastic pollution. My group name was Angie, Fern, Easton, Armani, and Ene.

Next I had to talk about plastic pollution. For example :The reason why plastic pollution is bad is because when you throw rubbish in the sea the sea creatures will eat it and might get sick and might die.

Lastly I had to make a DLO about plastic pollution. For example : I will talk about why plastic pollution is bad?

I enjoyed doing this task. I did well at talking about plastic pollution. I need to improve on adding more ideas.

Water Cycle

This week I learned about the water cycles and the 3 types of matters.

First I had to learn about the 3 types of matters. It was solid, liquid, and gas. Those are the 3 matters of water cycle. For example: Solid would be a matter of ice, Liquid would be a matter for water and Gas would be steam.

Next I had to label the different stages of the water cycle using the terms at the bottom of the diagram. For example : Source of heat is the sun because it talks about the heat and the source.

Lastly I had to use the commenting tool to explain what the different stages are, and what stage of matter the water is. For example : comment Precipitation.

Train Transport

This week I learnt how to design transports.

First I learned the 3 transport which are land, rails, and air. I had to design this in my own imaginary.

Next I had to pick a transport. The transport I picked was a Train because it goes on land and rails.

Lastly I picked the train and designed the train. Then I had to title the train and label the train. For example : the front window.

I enjoyed making the labels. I did well at making the train. I need to improve on learning more about the transports.

Explanation About Train Design

This week I learned how to Explanation About Train Design.

First I had to pick any vehicle that is part of air, sea, land, and rail. I chose a type of train because it goes on rail.

Next I had to draw a train by myself on a google draw. I had to also desgin the train and label the parts that’s on the trains which are the wheels that goes on rails, flash light, the front wheel, the side windows for people to look outside while the train is moving.

Then I had to introduction what i’m gonna say. For example : I chose to create a vehicle shaped as a train but has things to go on rail & land. My vehicle has car wheels and my vehicle has windows for people to look at and a front window for the passengers to look at while driving. The train has buttons to activate them.

Lastly I had to write down an explanation about how does it helps society. I written down : This vehicle helps society by going on rails and lands. My train, which is shaped like a train, has buttons to activate the wheels and the door as it stops at the train station. My train has doors for people to come out of the train when the passenger is in the right direction for the people who want to go.

I enjoyed doing this task. I did well at explanation. I need to improve on explaning more about the train that goes on rails & adding more label onto the train.

Rails

This week I learned about rails.

First I had to talk about what is a skateholder. A skateholder is when they gain money from the technology. Invested in the technology and made a monetary gain.

Next I had to get into groups of 3 or 4 and explain what skateholder are and how trains benefit on a piece of paper.

Then I had to research facts about trains. For example : Mallard’s cab had a dynamometer which should how fast the locomotive was travelling and recorded the speed on a paper tape.

Lastly I had to make a google slide and research or write down the facts about trains. I also have to attribute the picture.

I enjoyed learning about trains. I did well at researching facts about trains. I need to improve on finding a better picture.

Pros and Cons

Sea transportation is when they take people somewhere.

Pros for ship is : you wake up every morning in a new place, they’re great for families, they can be very affordable. and they’re easy, convenient, and relaxing.

Cons for ship is : you don’t get much time at each destination, they’re terrible for the environment, and they’re not quite all-inclusive.

Pros is advantages and cons is disadvantages.
