Te Wiki o te Reo Maori

This week for Miss White’s inquiry group we learned about te wiki o te Reo Māori for Māori language weekend.

First, I had to make a copy of the te wiki o te Reo Māori google slide. There were 15 tasks to do during the whole block. I first started off with the KWL chart. K stands for Knowledge, W stands for Wonder, and L stands with Learned. For knowledge I had to write down what I already know about Māori. For wonder I had to write down questions I would like to know about Māori, and for learned I had to write down what I already learned.

Next, I had to learn how to introduce yourself in Te Reo Māori. I had to watch a video below and write my own mihi in the box. For example: Ko Brooke tōku ingoa. After I finish watching the video, I had to watch the video linked below, and to find the Māori translation for the Kupu. For example: what is this? He aha Tenie. After I finished doing the matches in Māori, I had to choose one of the stories below to listen to or read. The options were Journey of a waka, ika a whiro, oriori, nga pepeha a nga tupuna, Rahui, he toi whaka iro, weaving tukutuku, and kakano. I picked Rahui because it looks interesting.

Then, I had to do SSR Selfie (Super Silent reading). I had to write down who is the author or illustrator, who are the main character, recount what happened in the story, and list three words with your meaning in your own words from the story or book you have listen to or read. For example: Happy means kind of excited. After we finished, we had to find ways we can respond to, for example: Kei te pehea Koe? We had to translate it to English to Māori. One of the sentences were, I am feeling well. We also had to join the Kupu – Using the line tool, match the Kupu to its’ correct translation.

Korero between friends.  Insert a photo of yourself, and a photo of a classmate. Make your speech bubble ask your friend how they are in Te Reo.  Choose one of the responses from slides 5-6 for your classmate to use in response to you. My partner for the slide was my friend called Sila. She asked me “He Pene Tenei.” which means this is a pencil. After that we had to Kei te aha Koe? What are you doing? Watch the video, then match the Kupu. I completed all of the Kupu and matched it with the right order. Then he had to do another Korero between friends.  Insert a photo of yourself, and a photo of a classmate. Make your speech bubble ask your friend how they are in Te Reo.  Choose one of the responses from slide 8 for your classmate to use in response to you. She asked me “Kei te pai ahau” which means I am feeling good.

After, we had to choose one of the tasks below to complete as your DLO part of your project. The options were to interactive quiz (Kahoot, Booklet, Quizlet etc. Google Slide quiz etc.), virtual tour – create a virtual tour using Screencast and Google Earth to create virtual tours of significant Māori cultural sites, digital Storybook – Use Pixton to make a comic or Google Slides to make an animation of narratives that incorporate what you’ve learnt about Māori legends, myths, or historical events, infographic – Use Google Drawings to present key information or language you’ve learnt from the Māori culture, Māori Language Phrasebook – Use Google Docs, or Slides, or Drawings to create a Māori Language Phrasebook, or Māori Worksheet – be a teacher and create a worksheet you could use to “test” student’s knowledge of Māori language.  This can be designed for a Year 1 student, or a Year 8 student. I picked to make a DLO.

Lastly, we get to play Māori math games. There were numbers in Māori, Māori Color, Fruit & Veg, and Animals, and last for not least Māori Vocabulary – this game requires you to learn the words before playing. After we finish playing the different type of games, we had to take a screenshot of our score.

Palm Oil

This week for Miss White’s reading group we learned how to look at two sides of an issue and form an opinion, to look at an issue and debate your opinion and palm oil.

What is palm oil? Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil derived from the mesocarp (reddish pulp) of the fruit of the oil palm. The oil is used in food manufacturing.

First, we had to discuss in a group what palm oil is. Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil derived from the mesocarp (reddish pulp) of the fruit of the oil palm. The oil is used in food manufacturing. For example: skittles are made out of palm oil.

Next, Miss White explained to us what we are supposed to do. We had to make a copy of the argumentation board and work through it.

Afterwards, we had to create a DLO explaining your opinion on “Should we continue to buy products with Palm Oil?”. Add some facts and pictures.

Lastly, we had to recount what you have learned on my blog.

I enjoyed doing this task. I did well at explaining what palm oil is. I need to improve on adding more details and facts into my DLO and google slide.

Numerator & Denominator

This week for Miss White’s maths group we learned about how to identify fractions, and we also learned about numerator and denominator.

What are fractions? Fractions are part of a whole, or any number of equal parts. A fraction describes how many parts of a certain size there are. For example : one – half, eight – fifths, and three – quarters.

What is numerator and denominator? Numerator is the top number, denominator is the bottom number. Denominator tells how many equal parts are in the whole have been cut & numerator tells how many equal parts of the whole you have or the number that tells you the whole amount is the denominator. The numerator tells you how many pieces out of the whole that you are talking about in your situation.

First, Miss White talked to us about numerator and denominator and fractions. She said “Fractions have two parts, the denominator and numerator. The denominator is the bottom number in a fraction, so it goes down on the bottom below the fraction line or bar.” For example :  1/2 (one half).

Next, Miss White explained to us the 2 tasks. For the first one we had to complete the document called identifying fractions. All you have to do is, answer the questions. For example  : There are 29 children in a class. 14 of them like playing football. What fraction of the class like playing football? The answer will be 7/15 because 15 takes away 8 equals 7 so 7 people didn’t like playing football.

Lastly, we had to create a DLO explaining the numerator and denominator of a fraction. And we also had to explain how you can identify a fraction. We had to make the DLO simple so people could probably read or understand it probably. For example : if a little kid saw someone’s DLO about a football and he doesn’t understand the meaning of the words he will not know anything and won’t learn.

I enjoyed doing this task. I did well at explaining numerator and denominator. I need to improve on doing simple details for other people to understand what I am talking about.

Here is my work!

Basic Facts Boxes

This week for maths I learned about Basic Facts Boxes.

Basic Facts Boxes is a type of Math game that you sort out the answers. For example: 1+1=2.

First, I had to figure out which one I want to do for math’s. The options were plus, minus, and multiplications. I picked minus because I was thinking that it is the best way to start off with. I also had to pick another option. The options were, random, and order. I picked order because I think the same as minus.

Next, I had to start off by figuring out the answers for the math’s. The minus was easy for me. For example: 20-1= 19, 19-1=18.

Lastly, I had to press check when I finished answering the math problem. For example: when you finish answering your problem of math’s you had to press check to see if you got some wrong, some correct.

I enjoyed learning about basic facts boxes. I did well at answering the problems or solving the problems. I need to improve on moving on to the multiplications.

Palm Oil

This week for Miss White’s reading groups we learned about how to look at two sides of an issue and form an opinion, to look at an issue and debate your opinion, and palm oil.

What is palm oil? Palm oil is a type of edible vegetable oil that comes from any type of fruit of palm trees such as cat palm, windmill palm, bismarck palm, or just a normal palm tree. For example : There was a palm tree in front of your school with coconuts on top.

First, we had to discuss in a group what palm oil is. Palm oil is a type of edible vegetable oil that comes from any type of fruit of palm trees such as cat palm, windmill palm, bismarck palm, or just a normal palm tree. For example : Palm oil is a type of oil that contains fruit and palm trees inside.

Next, Miss White talked about palm oil. She told us what our tasks were. Our tasks were making a copy of the argumentation board and working through it. For the argumentation slide we had to answer the questions and write down why palm oil is bad. The titles were: Why is palm oil bad, palm oil products, use the question dice to write down questions of what you want to know about palm oil, notes, palm oil is bad, finding evidence to support inference. For palm oil products Miss White linked a countdown shopping. The reason why she linked the countdown shopping site is because she wants us to find 5 products that contain palm oil.

Afterwards, we had to watch one of the videos that talks about palm oil. After we finished watching the videos Miss White put in the google slide we had to write down notes that I found inside the video. For example : you’ll find many products you use everyday. It’s in everything from makeup and toothpaste to doughnut chocolates.

Lastly, we had to create a DLO explaining your opinion on “Should we continue to buy products with Palm Oil?”. We had to write down why it is bad for the environment, what products contain palm oil, and are there any alternatives? We had to pick one title to write about. I picked out why it is bad for the environment.

I enjoyed doing this task. I did well at explaining why it is bad for the environment. I need to improve on adding details into the DLO and the argumentation board.

Speech Competition

This week we watched people who made it to the final performing their speech.

What is speech? Speech is the form of language that people can hear. People use speeches to communicate with others and what is going on.

First, we lined up and walked into the hall quietly and respectfully to show respect to the speakers. The speakers were Micaela, Keira, Hasna, Sunny, Chelle, Mahdi, Marcel, and other people.

Next, Ms Anderson talked to us about the rules for us while watching the speakers talk about their topic. The first person was Micaela. She is a year 4 and came on stage standing straight, giving some eye contact, and other stuff. Her topic was about starting school at 10pm. My favourite thing about her topic is that she gave lots of facts and details.

Then, the next person was Ahu. Ahu is a year 3 and came on stage confident to talk about his speech. My favourite part about Ahu’s topic/speech is that he gave lots of confidence, eye contact, information, and more details.

After that, the third person was Keira. Keira is a year 7 and came on stage giving lots of eye contact, and using her mouth to flow and her voice is loud and clear. Keira’s topic is about gender bias. My favourite part of her speech is that she was able to smile and look proud of herself. The fourth person was Hasna. Hasna is a year 6 and came onto stage to talk about her speech. Her topic is about ocean pollution. When we were talking she knew some of her parts by heart. My favourite part about her speech is that she did well at explaining how many marine animals are or have died.

Lastly, the last person was Marcel, Marcel is a year 5 and is the best speech. He came into stage with no cue cards in his hands. My favourite part is that he knew all of his speech off by heart, gave lots of contact threw the whole speech, he also used hand signals. The winner was everyone but Marcel got 3 certificates because he didn’t need cue cards and he knew it off by heart.

Congrats to everyone!

I enjoyed listening to the speakers. I did well at participating.

Having Sportmanship

This week for PB4L we learned about how to show an understanding of sportsmanship.

What is good sportsmanship?  A good sportsmanship is when people who are playing or watching a sport treat each other with respect. This also includes players, parents, coaches, and officials.

What are sport officials? Sport officials is a type of sport, competition, and responsible for the rules of the sports, including sportsmanship decisions.

First, we discussed what good sportsmanship is. A good sportsmanship is when people who are playing or watching a sport treat each other with respect. This also includes players, parents, coaches, and officials. For example : If a girl was playing rugby and other people were watching her they would give her a clap, compliment her on how she played well, respecting her, and other types of kind words. If I was that girl I would feel impressed and happy.

Next, Miss Tele’a explained to us what our task is and what to do after. We had to make a copy of a poster and write down details about good sport and bad sport. For example : I wrote down for good sport, good sport is where someone compliments others of how they have done good or bad. (It doesn’t matter if you lose or win.) Miss Tele’a created a jamboard with examples about good and bad sports. We can make up our own type of words or we can copy the jamboard and add details (it’s up to you).

Lastly, after we finished making and decorating our poster we had to choose ONE of the following tasks. The 3 tasks were to create a slideshow that teaches someone how to be a good sport, create an animation of someone playing any sport, and write a recount about your soccer session with Coach Francis using photos from this folder.

I enjoyed doing this task. I did well at finishing off my DLO. I need to improve on adding more details into my work because it is kinda basic but I tried my best.

SSR Selfie

This week I learned about SSR Selfie.

SSR stands for Super Silent Reading. Super Silent Reading is where you read quietly for 15 or 10 minutes.

First I had to choose a book and read for 10 minutes. For example  : I picked a book called Drama to write about.

Next I had to write down the main characters that were in the book that you talked about. The main characters were Matt, Callie, Liz, and Raina.

Then I had to write down the illustrations. The illustrators was Raina Telgemeier.

Lastly I had to list 3 new words I don’t know in my own meanings. For example : I think a rocketship is a type of vehicle.

I enjoyed doing this task. I did well at listing 3 words in my own meanings. I need to improve on writing something down basic.
