Ancient time

LI: To explore how our ancestors measured time

For inquiry, we learned about ancient telling time (hourglass, sundial, clepsydra). We used our smart searching skills to research and create a DLO that tells us about ancient timekeeping devices. We were challenged to get into groups of 3, and to find out what our device will be. An hourglass was used in ancient times, some people call it sand time or sandglass. Sundial was created in Ancient Egypt around 15000 BC, people use this to connect to natural time or to teach them about the Earth’s rotation. Clepsydra is an ancient water clock that measures time. We watched a video that tells us the brief history of keeping time. We enjoyed doing this activity because we get to learn and understand the history of ancient times.

AI movie day/night

LI: To understand the how time move

For inquiry, we were challenged to use our smart searching skills to research day and night, creating an AI video to show the process. We watched 2 videos that explained the Earth’s rotation and revolution, day and time. One full rotation of the Earth is one day, the part facing the light is a day and the part in shadow is night. We used Hailuo AI to create our video that shows the earth rotating that is transferring from day to night by creating our own prompt. We enjoyed doing this activity because we get to use our skills to create a video by AI and get to know how time moves.

Waltzing Matilda

LI: To understand the story within the poem

For Reading, we learned about a poem/song called Waltzing Matilda. We read a text that talked about a swagman traveling from one place to another. In the poem, for every end of the line there is “You’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me”. When we read the poem, we answered all of the questions with our own words and what we know about it. We were challenged to create a DLO that reflects the analysis of the poem and to summarise the poem with exactly 25 words. We enjoyed doing this activity because we got to learn his history and understand.

Hone Tuwhare Podcast

For reading we learned about Hone Tuwhare, he was one of the famous person who created poems about his life and rain. Group 2  were challenged to create a Google Vid about his poem and recorded ourselves on saying the poem one by one. We got into groups of 3 who was me, Melle and Ataahua. Something interesting I found about learning this was when one of his poem was about a little kid making sure he’s safe when he went to the grocery shop while it was raining. I enjoyed doing this activity because we get to know about his facts and poems of what he created.

TLW – Word Problems

For maths, we created a presentation as a group about word problems for Tonga Language Week. We made the problems out of  a topic or Tonga items. We had one word problem each on each slide, some used Tonga groceries, Tonga items, lolly lei etc. In the word problems we included equations (+, x, -, divison, kilometers, meters). I enjoyed this task because we get to learn about Tonga Language Week by using maths.

Once a Panther

LI: To identify the key historical context and events related to the Polynesian Panthers and the Dawn Raids as depicted in the graphic novel.

For reading, we read a text about Polynesian panthers, but the topic was called Once a Panther. Group 2 was challenged to create a comic strip that describes a scene related to the ideas of prejudice and justice by using thought bubbles or dialogue that explains the image. Something I have found interesting about this challenge is that we are learning this because we need to understand the meaning behind this.

AI Movie

LI: To use our knowledge about dinosaurs in creative ways

For inquiry, we were given 2 challenges to help us show our learning in creative and fun ways. The first challenge was to use Adobe Express to generate an image about each dinosaur on our completed sheet. The second challenge was to use ai hailuoai.video to create an AI flim showing our dinosaurs in their habitat. I enjoyed doing this challenge because we get to use our creative skills to generate an image of our dinosaurus.

RISE UP: The Story of the Dawn Raids and the Polynesian Panthers

LI: To evaluate (form an opinion) the text and respond to the provocation

For reading, Group 2 read a text called RISE UP: The Story of the Dawn Raids and the Polynesian Panthers. We were challenged to create a DLO that explores and discusses both perspectives of this historical event in our groups. We used our smart searching skills to learn and find stuff about the dawn raids, which lead us to talk about the dawn raids. For our own opinion , we said that we think the dawn raids was a very discriminal and shameful event that occured in New Zealand. Something I found interesting about this text was that alot of policies had targeted pacific people just because they don’t belong in this country.

Trip to Auckland War Memorial Museum

For inquiry, we learned about volcanoes, what type of volcanoes they have and the different size/shape of the volcano. We went to the museum to finish our topic on volcanoes and learn more interesting things we don’t know. Our challenge in the volcano room was that we had 30 seconds to decide what to pack if there was a volcanic eruption near us. We were put into a group of boys and girls and on the table, there was a backpack, toys, can of food, hole punch, torch, can opener, pan, gloves, cat, muesli bar, cat food, goggles, bottle of water, tea towel, first aid kit, mask and a coloring book. Our group was in a rush, but we were using our thinking skills wisely. In our backpack we took everything but the can opener, mask and a coloring book. One group took everything, and the other group took everything except for the cat. During the museum we headed into the World War 2 and during that time we had to be absolutely respectful and quiet in that area. One interesting fact when we walked around in the galleries was when we walked into World War 2 and that there is a specific book opened but locked inside a box that shares the diary that the solders had written about what is going on. They flip the page every single day leading to a different solider diary.

Backpack choices:

  • backpack
  • toys
  • can of food
  • hole punch
  • torch
  • can opener
  • pan
  • gloves
  • cat
  • muesli bar
  • cat food
  • goggles
  • bottle of water
  • tea towel
  • first aid kit
  • mask
  • coloring book

Dinosaur Eggs

LI: To understand how scientists discover, record and learn from fossils.

For inquiry, we were challenged to used Adobe Express to imagine what a real dinosaur egg might have look liked in the wild when paleontologist discovered fossils/eggs/dinosaur. Before we did the AI challenge, we opened our mystery dinosaur eggs and we discovered an Ankylosaurus. Using what we learned about dinosaurs and finding facts, we created an image that looked like the little dinosaur egg was found and hidden in a forest. In this image me and my partner added details like, footprints on the egg, creatures/insects crawling behind or surrounding the egg, rocks and things you could find in the forest. This challenge is to show our knowledge and skills of what a paleontologists might have seen years ago. I enjoyed this activity because we get to discover and show what paleontologist would’ve seen and found years ago. Do you know why paleontologist study fossils?
